Nelson Mandela's biography

Nelson Mandela was a politician and an activist who has had a very big influence on people around the world as a great leader.

Mandela was born in Qunu, South Africa, on July 18, 1918. Being a child, he worked hard herding family's cattle. His parents were Gadla and Nodekeni, and he was the only male of 4 siblings. After attending a mission school, Union College of Fort Hare, he studied law in Johannesburg.

In 1942, he joined African National Congress (ANC). There he was the Youth League Secretary in 1947, and he was the Deputy Head of ANC in 1952. Until, ANC outlawed him in 1960. Fighting to end the unjust system of apartheid in South Africa, he was sentenced to life term for anti-government activities. But after 27 years, Mandela was released on February 11, 1990. Next year, he became in President of ANC.

Mandela received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. And, with 62% of vote, he was the first democratically elected president of South Africa (1994-1999).
