NELSON MANDELA

Nelson Mandela is considered a revolutionary leader in South Africa with the ability to motivate others for a just democracy.

Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the small tribe of Thembu located in Qunu in South Africa. His parents were Gadla and Nodekeni had 3 sisters. When he was 5 years old, his first job was to shepherd the family cattle. His favorite music was the classic one (Handel, Tchaikovsky) and he considered the sunset as his favorite moment of the day.

He attended the mission school and later at Union College in Fort Hare. He studied law in Jahannesburg, where he obtained his law degree.
Mandela married three times and had six children. He was married to Evelyn Ntoko in 1944 for 12 years and divorced her. Then, in 1958, he married Winnie Madikizela, who was a political activist and also divorced her. He returned to marry Graca Machel in 1998.

Nelson Mandela became a leader in the African National Congress (ANC). Where he has been classified as a terrorist by the South African government and sent to prison. Mandela would spend the next 27 years in prison. He was finally released by international pressure in 1990.

Nelson continued his campaign to end apartheid, for this reason he won the elections and became president of South Africa in 1994-1999 (62% of the vote).
He won the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership for his activism against apartheid in 1993.

After retirement, he raised money for charities for children. Mandela was ill for several years during his retirement. He died on December 5, 2013.

Nelson Mandela believes in democracy, equality and learning. He was determined to restore freedom and peace to all South Africans. He changed a country. Mandela has always been an inspiration in South Africa and in the world.
