Well, first we have the "Basset hound" breed. Those dogs are of french origin and they were used for hunting of small animals. The name was a direct reference to the low-slung that they have and it is in french that means little low dog. Then, the "Rottweiler" breed is named just like that because the ancient romans traveled through europe with large and powerful dogs; centuries later, butchers of Rottweil city used descendants of those dogs as guard dogs and then they became known like Rottweiler or German guard dog.The "Husky" breed is named just like that because they are Eskimo dogs, the "Dalmatian" breed is named just like that because the region of Dalmatia was the first place with spotted dogs, the "Cairn Terrier" breed is named just like that by their ability to rouse the rats and mice of the cairn, the "Weimaraner" breed is named just like that because their first enthusiasts was named the Grand Duke Karl August of Weimar, the "Chow Chow" breed is named just like that because their original name was so difficult to pronounce so the english-speaking people called Chow Chow; and others more like Schnauzer, Beagle, Whippet and Shih Tzu.
